[ Thankfully, Viktor is a morning person! Depending on how early this was, he got this message while walking Makkachin or while having breakfast or while working out at the studio (even though it doesn't open on Sundays) (the perks of being in charge!).
So it's not that he's too sleepy to understand what's going on, he's just not surprised by it (yet). Considering Anya's name, she probably has Russian family, and it makes sense that she speaks some Russian. He's a little confused as for why she chose to practice it on him on a Sunday morning, sure, and she seems to be fluent, which he wouldn't have thought??, but he'll roll with it.
He replies in Russian, of course. ]
Yes, I understand you. Good morning! What can I help you with?
or. maybe do? Anya seems to calm down when there's someone who's capable of responding to her with the words that she directly wants to use, not having to filter them through a funnel of a different language where she might not have quite managed to build up her vocabulary.]
you are so calm.... it makes me feel better.
but I have a problem. normally I don't speak Russian? but today I do. the alphabet and everything. and some Japanese characters but that's also odd.
I'm confused, but my English has gotten worse, so I cannot fully explain it that well to anyone else
[ Well, that makes him pause. Her Russian is flawless. And she's not the kind of person who'd lie, right? Right. That's not even worth considering. ]
Well, it's not that bad. You're communicating perfectly, just in a different language. [ Viktor, that's not the problem. ]
You're saying you learned to speak Russian overnight? And some Japanese?
and you lost your native English?
[ He's still rolling with it, of course. But that's less a of quirk and more of a survival skill at this point, so it's not like he's going to stop doing that if he can help it. It doesn't make sense at all, but that's kind of a pattern now, isn't it? He checks the Retrospec app to see what's going on there as soon as he sends this message. Assuming that anything strange may be traced back to Retrospec is, well, not as farfetched as it should be. ]
[Viktor will probably be able to find Anya's message on retrospec - a hodgepodge of languages where the Russian is absolutely perfect, but her Japanese and English have switched to intermediate at best. Still, she responds to him here.]
yes. before I only knew English, even though mama and grandma and grandpa would speak in Japanese sometimes. my grandparents in Russia never tried to speak to me in Russian.
but now it is different. now I can read all the cyrillic in the postcards from Russia. some notes in Japanese too. my hair turned silver overnight too, but I did not die it and mama would not surprise me with that if she could.
I don't know what to do. I texted you and yuratchka because I don't know who else would understand me....
[mr. nikiforov got upgraded to viktor and yuri got upgraded to full diminutive yuratchka apparently]
[ The hair thing is weird too, but it's the Yuratchka bit that really gets through to him. And that's actually not for the better. sob! He can see on her Retrospec post that she's really not okay with any of this... Okay. Okay. She needs emotional support. She contacted you for this. You can do this, Viktor. ]
Everything will be fine, there's always a solution to these things. You can dye your hair back and languages aren't that hard
[ He pauses. ]
Maybe it can be reversed. Do you remember anything unusual happening before this change? Like hitting your head, or passing out?
should i dye my hair back? I didn't think of that. people do seem to find it a bit odd...
no, I didn't hit my head. it was another normal day, really. and mama doesn't remember anything odd happening either, and I think there would be a fuss if I hurt myself and didn't remember. [the city might be on fire] it just happened very suddenly.... it's sort of like the other changes that people are experiencing but much bigger?
You don't have to dye it back, only if your current hair color bothers you. People dye their hair in unusual colors all the time.
[ He sends that message first, and then considers what to say next. All of this is more than a little surreal. ]
This might fix itself. [ Unlikely, but it could happen. And she should be able to calm down in the meantime, right? Yes, this is a good idea. ] Why don't you wait and see?
I know of a good English vocabulary app I can recommend to you in the meantime.
I do not know if it bothers me.... I don't think that it looks back but I'm worried that people might think that I'm weird
ok, I'll try. hopefully the English won't be too difficult... I still have to go to school and everything. it just takes a little bit longer for me to be able to read everything?
Loves me...? Ah, even if that's true, that's a kindness that I'm not sure I deserve... and even then, will that keep them from thinking I'm weird? It's scary...
Knowing more languages is interesting... but still odd. But it is good to be optimistic, maybe?
[that's the vibe she's getting from viktor anyway]
Okay..... Then I will do my best! I'll ask Yuratchka if he knows anything... I do not know anyone else in the city who speaks Russian besides him and Viktor - and he takes good care of me, but can I still ask you questions sometimes too?
I'm worried that it'll be harder to understand me...
Of course! You can ask me questions whenever you want. It's refreshing to speak Russian in Recollé with someone other than Yura.
Maybe you'll wake up tomorrow and things will be back to normal. I hope so! But if they don't, try not to panic and things will work out because you'll make them.
[ For Viktor standards, that was pretty good. He's aware of it and he rereads this twice before sending it. He's kind of proud... ]
